Horace Joseph Norris, 86, resident of Galveston Island, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017. Horace was born on October 20, 1930 in Port Bolivar, Texas. He was raised in Frenchtown by his parents Ulyess and Rhea Reaux Norris.
As a young man, he shrimped commercially for the Grasso fleet while later working as a longshoreman (1950 to 1961). To support his growing family, he worked in construction as a pile driver foreman for Nunez Construction Co. and J.D. Abrams.
Always a fisherman at heart, he shrimped any chance he had with the Mosquito Fleet, owning his boat and later working beside Captain Steve “Zip” Mozara on the “Miss Andrina”
Never one to sit idle, after retirement, he worked at Aramco Blinds, Ivey’s Exxon and as a deckhand for Galveston Harbor Tours.
Our Dad’s legacy is one of perseverance. He will be remembered for tackling life’s challenges head on, the only way he knew…by hard work. His unconventional problem solving and “Cajun ingenuity” will provide those who knew him with a lifetime of smiles and laughter.
He enjoyed fishing, cooking and working in his garden.
It can be said that any man can become a father but it takes someone special to be a dad…he will forever be our daddy.
He is preceded in death by his wife Claudene Studdard Norris; his parents, Ulyess and Rhea Reaux Norris; and his brother, Ulyess Paul Norris, Jr.
Horace leaves to cherish his memory, daughter Kathy (Mike), sons Jimmy Norris (Martha) and Jody Norris (Karen); sisters Shirley Senseney and Gloria Sievers; grandchildren Matthew and Sterling Tramonte, Kyle Norris Tramonte, Gracie Norris and Cody Norris.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at The Meridian for their kindness shown to our father.
