Steve Panagiotis Pothos, 83, of Galveston, Texas passed away peacefully on February 17th, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.
Steve was born in Pireaus, Greece on March 20th, 1937 to Panagiotis Pothos and Koula Karalis. He was the youngest of seven children, five brothers and one sister. Growing up in Greece during Hitler’s invasion wasn’t your typical childhood, so at the age of 17, Steve left his home country and made his way to America. Arriving in New York with nothing but the clothes on his back, Steve worked in several kitchens while obtaining his citizenship. After several years of hard work he was able to begin his career as a United States Merchant Marine. This career landed him in the Port of Galveston where he met his late wife Patricia Reegan. During their marriage, they had two children and he was able to successfully own and operate several businesses including Steve’s Gas Palace, Broadway Motors, The Dairy Kream, a grocery store, and numerous real estate ventures. Steve was lucky enough to find love twice with his wife Maryann Moreno and he was blessed with three more children. He continued running his businesses and eventually made his way back to his true passion of being on the water with the United States Merchant Marines. Steve loved the United States Navy and held great pride in being able to assist in American efforts during their conflict in the Middle East. After retiring, Steve still didn’t slow down and spent lots of time buying, renovating, and selling cars.
Steve lived a beautiful life filled with family, friends, and good food. He enjoyed running, soccer, racquetball, cooking, and having a hot cup of coffee with old friends. None of this made him as happy as spending time with his family. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, uncle and most of all Papou. Steve’s greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. He was the patriarch of the family and the void will never be filled.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Pothos; parents, Panagiotis and Koula Pothos; sister, Ekaterini Kosmas and brothers, Kyriakos, Dionisios, Giannis and John. Steve is survived by his wife Maryann Pothos; brothers, George and Gus Pothos; children, Panagiotis Pothos, Margarita Pothos, Stefanos Pothos Jr. and wife Michelle, Katina Cordova and husband Justin, Nikos Pothos, Bobby Landers, Stephanie Johnson and husband Todd, Crystal Gandara and husband Joe; grandchildren, Amanda and Dominic Salameh, Andrew and Marcus Landers, Stefanos and Tyler Pothos, Justin Cordova, Nikos Pothos and Brandon Ojeda, Steven Gandara and Tiffany Lynch. As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation and Trisagion service will be held at 9:30am, Thursday, February 25, 2021, followed by the Funeral service beginning at 10:30am. All services will be held at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 714 19th Street, Galveston, Texas, The Reverend Father Stelios Sitaras officiating.
