Lil’s presence in the community began in 1948 when she was asked to be a Princess in Galveston’s first post-WWII revival and celebration of Mardi Gras. Known to give generously of her time and talents, Lil also quickly became an integral part of the Galveston community, as she was an active member of Galveston’s Junior Welfare League before it was renamed the Junior League of Galveston County, Inc. Lil was a tireless and valuable member of the Junior League. In addition to serving as the League’s Treasurer for four years, she served on numerous committees, and in her later League years, served as Sustaining Advisor on many committees. One of the committees she enjoyed most was serving as Sustaining Advisor for the Arrangements Committee. That year she helped the chair and her committee arrange a motor coach trip to an Astros baseball game – complete with food, beverage and tickets. A great time was had by all!
Her other well-known talents included the formation of a Professional Puppeteer Company in the early 1960s. She and her cohorts performed for birthdays, parties, at the Galveston Summer Beach Band concerts, as well as other island events. Their group was so popular, they have the opportunity to perform on television in both Galveston and Austin!
Lil was also an active member of the Ninth District Dental Society Auxiliary throughout Bill’s dental career and included her serving as chair of the Auxiliary when the Association’s annual convention was held in Galveston in 1976.
