Sam Sakowitz Clark

Sam Sakowitz Clark died Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at his home in Galveston. Sam was born in Galveston on June 5, 1929 to Lt. Colonel Max and Tina Clark. He attended Galveston schools, graduated from Ball High and then his beloved Texas A&M in 1950. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan and then Korea. Upon completing his service in the Army he began his lengthy career with Glazer's Wholesale Liquor in New Orleans where he and his wife of 61 years, Myrtle Lee (Turtle) raised their two children, Lesley and Max. After 27 years in New Orleans he and his family returned to Galveston. Because of his love and involvement with Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Sam was instrumental in organizing the Krewe of Brew which later became the Krewe of Gambrinus. In 2000 he reigned as their King. Sam also worked tirelessly to promote and procure the cruise ships to Galveston. He was deputy in the Galveston County Sheriff Department. He was a member of the Sunday morning coffee club and enjoyed his Saturday lunches with George Mitchell and the gang. Sam was a member of Temple B'Nai Israel, El Mina Shrine, and the Texas A&M alumni association. Sam is predeceased by his parents Max and Tina, his brother Irving Clark, and his great-granddaughter Daisy Ruth Peterek. He is survived by his wife Turtle, daughter Lesley and husband Greg, son Max and wife Ilene, granddaughters Heather (Ben) Peterek, Samantha (Isaac) Renfro, Emily (Marr) Elfstrom, and Jessica (Ian) Smith and the joy of his life, great-grandson Townes Peterek. The family would like to thank Connie Martinez for her being his loving companion and caregiver. Services will be held graveside, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 2:00PM at the Temple B'Nai Israel Cemetery on 61st Street. Pallbearers will be his four grand son-in-laws. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be sent to Temple B'Nai Israel or Daisy's Room at Ronald McDonald House. Aggie or Saints attire acceptable. Gig ‘Em Papa!

Services will be held graveside, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 2:00PM at the Temple B'Nai Israel Cemetery on 61st Street. Aggie or Saints attire acceptable.
