Lawrence Puccetti, Jr., “Junior”, age 93, passed from this life on Monday, January 22, 2024 at Jennie Sealy Hospital. He was born on August 4, 1930 in Galveston, Texas where he spent the majority of his life. He graduated from Ball High School in 1948. During his time at Ball High, he excelled in many sports including basketball, baseball, and bowling. When not in school or playing sports, Junior would work as a newspaper boy, a pinsetter at a local bowling alley and several other jobs, demonstrating at a young age his tremendous work ethic.
After high school, Junior joined the Navy and served as an electrician’s mate on the U.S.S. Currier. Unfortunately, his time in the Navy was cut short when his father, Lawrence Puccetti, Sr. passed away. Junior left the Navy to help his mother run Sonny’s Place where he worked from 1951 until his passing. While working at Sonny’s Place, young Melba Jackson walked in and Junior immediately told his mother, “That is the girl I’m going to marry.” and that’s what he did. Junior and Melba were together for 64 years and had three children. Melba was the love of his life and he missed her greatly since her passing in 2018.
Over the years, Junior not only had a loyal neighborhood clientele at Sonny’s Place, but he also cultivated a large UTMB medical student following. As a show of appreciation for being a second father to many of them and for the occasional dose of tough love, the alumni of UTMB Galveston named a scholarship after Junior: The Junior Puccetti Scholarship Endowment. Junior was known for his quick wit and fascinating stories. His warmth, sense of humor, and firm demeanor was endearing to so many and he will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Melba Puccetti; son, Lawrence Puccetti, III; parents, Lawrence and Teresa Puccetti; and brothers Raymond Puccetti and Julius Puccetti. Junior is survived by his daughter, Jo Lynn Falgout and husband Gregg; son Richard Puccetti; granddaughters Christine Gutknecht and husband Bill, and Kimberly Scheele and husband Evan; great-grandchildren Gregg Gutknecht, Francine Gutknecht, Connor Scheele, and Holly Scheele; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home. The visitation will begin at 2:00 pm with a memorial service to be held at 3:00 pm, with Deacon John Pistone and Deacon Robert Standridge officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Junior Puccetti Scholarship Endowment.
