Lavinia Camille Brock Bircher passed away September 15, 2023 in Galveston, Texas at age 86. Lavinia was born January 2nd, 1937 in Houston, Texas to James Thomas Stratton Brock and Camille Emmerton Brock. Lavinia was a proud 6th generation Texan, a direct decedent of Emily Austin Bryan Perry, sister of Stephen F. Austin.
Lavinia graduated from Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas in 1954; her family having moved to the Stratton Ridge area of Brazoria County in the late 1940s.
In 1958, Lavinia married James E. B. Berry and the couple had 3 children: James Berry Jr., Thomas Stratton Berry and Alice Austin Hill.
In 1978, Lavinia married Edgar Allen Bircher who had 4 children from his previous marriage. This “blended” family was close and committed from the start and remains so to this day.
Lavinia and Ed enjoyed life to the fullest: boating, traveling, and participating in numerous civic and volunteer activities. They were 40 year Galvestonians, living in the Harbor View area on the east end of the Island and taking in all Galveston had to offer.
Lavinia is survived by Ed, her devoted husband of 45 years, her three children and spouses: James (Cheryl), Stratton (Sharla) and Alice (Rob), and Ed’s four children and spouses: Douglas Bircher (Nancy), Stephen Bircher (Nancy), Todd Bircher (Tami) and Karen Richardson (Doug). She’s also survived by her niece, Carrie Brock of The Brookwood Community, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins. Lavinia was preceded in death by her parents Stratton and Camille, her brother Stratton Brock Jr., and nephew Bascom Brock.
Lavinia was devoted to her church, First Presbyterian Church in Galveston, loved gardening, and was a volunteer for years at the Galveston Meals on Wheels group. She loved spending evenings with her neighbor friends who were very near and dear to her heart.
Most of all, Lavinia cherished her husband and her family. Her greatest joy was to have the family all together. Our most recent Alaska cruise with all the family brought her much joy.
She was adored by her husband and will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 11am at First Presbyterian Church Galveston, 1903 Church St., followed by a graveside service at 2pm at Gulf Prairie Cemetery, Jones Creek, Texas. The services will be officiated by Reverend Stephen Hill.
