Judy Trout, 91, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, surrounded by family. She had been in hospice care for a long-term illness.
Judy was born Judith Ann Bailey on August 17, 1933, in Guymon, OK, to John and Lois Bailey. She was the oldest of their two children. Judy grew up in Guymon and graduated from Guymon High School in 1951. She was editor of her high school newspaper and a member of the National Honor Society. She went on to attend Oklahoma College for Women and graduated from Oklahoma City University (OCU) in 1955 with a degree in education.
Judy met her future husband Irl J. Trout, Jr. (Buddy) at OCU. The couple were married for 64 years until Buddy’s death in 2017. They had four children, Deborah Ann, Rebecca Lynn, Kathryn Kay and Irl J. III (Kip). Judy was also preceded in death by her parents and youngest daughter, Kathy, and son-in-law, Randy Hall.
Judy was a first-grade teacher in both Oklahoma City, OK and El Paso, TX, and taught pre-school readiness at Providence Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. Buddy’s career with Dow Chemical took them from Charlotte to Midland, MI and Longmont, CO before they eventually retired in Fort Smith, AR. They moved to Galveston, TX in the early 2000’s. Together, Judy and Irl enjoyed serving as church and hospital volunteers.
Judy also volunteered in various schools to provide remedial reading services. Her favorite pastimes included reading, Mah Jong, puzzles, and cross stitch. She loved attending Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) classes at UTMB and was a longtime member of the OLLI “Lifestory” class under the direction of Michelle Sierpina. Judy loved spending time with her family, the “Doc Martin” television show, southern gospel music, the movie “Steel Magnolias”, light-hearted mysteries, and laughter.
She is survived by daughter Debby Duckworth and husband Mack of Lubbock, TX and grandchildren Matthew O’Donnell, wife Rachel and great-granddaughter Emily of Lubbock, Darcy Marceau of Lubbock, and Amelia Duckworth of Jersey City, NJ; daughter Becky Unbehagen and husband Mike of Friendswood, TX and granddaughter Samantha Walsdorf and fiancé Shawn Smallets of Miami, FL; son Kip Trout of Town and Country, MO and grandchildren Bailey Trout of Grand Rapids, MI and Tyler Trout of Mesa, AZ; and grandchildren Mitchell Hall and wife Haley of Brandon, MS and Kaycie Hall and great-grandson Henri Hall-Engelmann of Jackson Heights, NY.
Judy is also survived by her brother Max Bailey, niece Melinda Huff and family, and nephew John Bailey and family, all of the Chicago area. She is also survived by step-grandchildren Chris Unbehagen and wife Angelica (Riley, Mackenzie, Levi and Savannah) of Santa Fe, TX; Chelsea Unbehagen and husband Devin Garza (Tori, Bradley and Vivian) of Friendswood, TX; and Chase Unbehagen and wife Gabrielle of League City, TX.
The family is grateful to Judy’s Anchor Hospice team, Solidago Health and Rehabilitation, and Be Blessed Home Care for the care and love they gave throughout her illness. A memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024 at J Levy & Termini Funeral Home in Galveston. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.
