Juanita Perez Lozano was born June 3, 1928, at John Sealy Hospital, Galveston TX to Bonifacio and Maria D. Perez. Juanita was baptized at “Nuestra Sra. De Guadalupe” on 45th street of Galveston in January of 1929. Her father died in 1938 when she was ten years old, and she followed his path as a tailor making beautiful wedding dresses and took the challenge of sewing many clothing items for family and friends until she was diagnosed with Glaucoma in her later years. Juanita attended catholic and public school and graduated from Ball High School. She married the late Johnny Flores Lozano in 1947. As a wife she raised four children and brought her family up as Catholic and was also a mother to many of their friends on 59th street. Juanita was proud to be born and raised in Galveston and participated in many events yearly such as 4th of July fireworks, Mardi Gras and volunteering for Dickens on the Strand. Juanita worked at American National while helping her husband with his business and volunteered for many other local Galveston organizations. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, International Oleander Society, St. Patrick’s church-Damas Our Lady of Guadalupe, and The Salvation Army Women’s Home League. Before her husband died, she attended Galveston College and went to work at UTMB Galveston in the Gynecology department and was a translator for doctors who had Spanish speaking patients. Juanita collected and reviewed many medical Mayo Clinic articles to speak the proper medical terms.
Juanita went on to retire from UTMB in 1995 and became a member of the UTMB Retirees Association. From there she spent most of time involved with charities including all mentioned and joined “The Friends of Moody Gardens” with her dear sister-n-law, Dorothy Perez. Juanita also had a side kick who was her sister, Bea Castaneda, who drove her around the island for many years. They were like Thelma and Louise! Juanita also loved to garden and was always ready for a challenge. She never drove a car and used local public transportation. Her children and grandchildren and everyone else’s children were her pride and joy. She loved to travel and enjoyed the company of all her family. Most of all Juanita was a devoted catholic and assisted in many ways to the Galveston Catholic churches and strived to attend church on a weekly basis.
Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, Bonaficio and Maria Perez, her husband Johnny F. Lozano, her siblings Alice Perez, Mary Lee Agrella, Beatrice Castaneda, Bonifacio Perez, and her grandchildren Christopher Tovar and Crystal Lozano.
