In Loving Memory of Jose “Wally” Garcia
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved Jose Garcia. He departed peacefully at home on July 2, 2025, surrounded by love and the presence of family. Jose was born on December 12, 1933, in San Benito, TX. As a child, his family moved to El Campo, TX, where he would later meet the love of his life, Esther Montez Garcia. After marrying, Jose and Esther made the beautiful island of Galveston, TX their permanent home. Together, they raised three daughters: Linda, Sylvia, and Lisa. It was also in Galveston where Jose began his remarkable 45-year career at his cherished Galveston College. Jose was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He lived a long, beautiful life rooted in faith, love, purpose, and strength. Known for his kindness, wisdom, generosity, and gentle spirit, Jose touched countless lives. He fought courageously until the very end.
In 2021, Jose retired from Galveston College after 45 years of dedicated service. He quickly became a respected and admired figure, beloved by faculty, staff, and students alike. The college became his second family, and he often spoke fondly of his coworkers and experiences. His work ethic, warmth, and loyalty left a lasting impact on the entire community.
Jose was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Esther Garcia; his daughter, Linda Garcia.
His legacy continues through his daughters Sylvia Gonzalez (Vic) and Lisa Salazar (Tony); his brother Manuel Garcia and sister Effie Taylor (Gary); his cherished grandchildren: Desiree Mata (Donny), Eric Serrato (Sara), Stephen Mata, Heather Serrato (Sammy), Lyndsey Mata (John), Mary Salazar, and Megan Salazar; and his great-grandchildren: Penelope White, Camila Demers, Sebastian White, Aiden Garcia, Mila Garcia, Aries Marroquin, Zayla Marroquin, Avery Demers, Cali Demers, Gabby Serrato, Freddy Martinez as well as extended family and friends.
Our family extends heartfelt gratitude for the kindness, support, and sympathy shown to us during this time of loss. Whether through words, gestures, or presence, your compassion has brought comfort and strength to our hearts. We are deeply thankful for your thoughtfulness.
A special thank you to his devoted caregiver, Mary Ventacur, and to Hospice Care Team, Inc. for their extraordinary care, compassion, and support during the last months of Jose’s life. Your presence brought peace and comfort to both him and our entire family.
Jose Garcia was truly one of a kind—the best husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will always be deeply loved and profoundly missed.
