John Robert Gates passed away September 30, 2025, at his private home in Texas City, TX after a long fight with cancer. He was born on December 27, 1961, in Olathe, KS.
He worked in the Maritime field and was fortunate to see many places in the world. He retired from Crowley Maritime as Captain after 30 years of service.
He loved fishing and cooking. With excellent guidance from his father-n -Law, Walter Charles Lisbony, he became an excellent BBQ chef and on his own became an excellent cook. He loved hanging out with family and friends. It’s what made him the happiest.
He was a devoted Husband, Father, Stepfather, Step Grandfather, Son n Law, and Uncle. He is fondly remembered by both family members and many close friends. He also loved our constant companion and fur baby, Bonnie.
He is preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Harold Rollow Gates, MaryAnn Langhoff Gates, and sister Jane Gates Moeser.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lisa Lisbony Gates; son, Mason Gates; Step Son, Jared Kulackoski and wife Kristina, step Grandsons, Preston Kulackoski and Ethan Brown of Lamarque; Mother-n-Law, Janet (Becky) Lisbony and Sister-n Law, Laura Holliday of Galveston; Several brothers and sisters; Cathy Kloster of Missouri, Pat Lobenstein and spouse Ken of Michigan, Ginny Keith and spouse Bob of Oklahoma. Mike Gates and spouse Jenny of Florida, James Gates and spouse Hui of Texas, Stephen Gates of Texas, Terri Gates and souse Matt of Texas, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 6:00 P.M. at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home, with Pastor James Lewis officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 5:00 P.M.
