James "Jim" Healy Obituary

James Casey Healy “Jim” passed away at home on September 28, 2024 surrounded by his family after a most courageous and hard fought battle against metastatic colon cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Jim was born on May 16, 1957 to Clarence and LoreRae Healy at St. Mary’s hospital in Galveston, Texas.

He attended Island Elementary School, Weis Middle School, and Ball High School where he  excelled both academically as well as in choir and performing arts singers. Jim then attended Southwest Texas State University from where he graduated in 1980 with a degree in Business Administration.

Jim Healy began working at age 13 as a bell boy at a local motel where his impeccable work ethic became clear. In his later teens while in high school he became an assistant janitor and custodian at First Baptist Church where he regularly walked 6 miles to perform his duties .On Sundays he would attend early mass at St. Peters Church so that he would not be late for work (considering that very long walk!). While in college Jim began working for Gal - Ice Company to pay his way through school. He often drove home on Fridays to work all weekend and return in time for classes on Monday. He accepted the position as a sales manager for Gal – Ice Company where he remained in that capacity until 1988.  In 1988 he began a most successful career at Del Papa Distributing where he worked in different management capacities until his retirement. Once Jim stepped away from the business world he was able to pursue a life long desire and passion to teach. He became a substitute teacher for CCISD and eventually accepted the full time position of “Super Sub” at Goforth Elementary School. He was awarded  CCISD Elementary Substitute of the Year in 2023. Jim was known for his incredible patience in helping children in the most difficult of circumstances. He truly loved his morning duty of traffic control. No one loved holding that stop sign more that Mr. H.  Perhaps most importantly, Jim Healy made it absolutely certain that Santa made an appearance at school every holiday season. Jim worked until limitations from his cancer made it impossible for him to do so. He truly touched the lives of so many children, families and coworkers with his ever-present positive attitude, willingness to help, and endless compassion.

Jim took immense pride in being the father of four amazing sons and took great joy in supporting their various hobbies and endeavors from life guarding, fishing, playing baseball and riding horses. For years he also volunteered along with his wife helping with the Galveston Independent School District’s “ All District Musicals.

Perhaps one of Jim’s greatest sources of pride was T-Belle Farm where he built and maintained a wonderfuly happy home for his family and several animal companions. Jim  loved his pond, his yard, his pasture, and his porch. He enjoyed sitting on that porch in the company of his family until he could no longer do so.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and LoreRae Healy; and brothers Joseph Healy and Patrick Healy.

Jim is survived by his wife of 37 years Alica (Lica “Lisa”) Levy Healy, his four sons Adrian (Catherine), Casey (Emily), J. Jacob(Alli) and Riley, three grandchildren Colton Healy, Kaleigh Healy, and Hayes Healy. Jim also leaves to cherish his memory his siblings Mary Endres, Denise Hefner,  Mike  ( Jo Ann), Tim (Debbie), and Keven (Patty), and God children Cathy Lee and Brett Healy. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Jim is also survived by dear friend and “brother in law” John Kovacevich (Barbara).

We are all immeasurably saddened and heartbroken. But, Jim Healy would want us to celebrate life and find joy in all we do. Most importantly, he would want us all to remember to always pay it forward and to be mindful that many families need help especially during the holidays.

The Healy Family wishes to thank Dr. Donna Dolle, Dr. Jason Willis and his oncology care team at MD Anderson, and Traditions Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care during this most difficult time. They would also like to thank all those who supported Jim and the Healy family through this incredibly hard journey, especially the staff and families at Goforth Elementary.

Donations may be made to CCISD CARES ( click on general fund) and please state in “NOTES” that donation to go to the lunch fund at Goforth Elementary. Jim felt it was very important that no child should ever run out of lunch money and that all kids deserve the option of “buying’  lunch, Blue Santa or any Holiday helping organization that assists children and families during the holidays or the charity of your choice.

Pall Bearers will be: Mike Healy, Tim Healy, Keven Healy, Brett Healy, Adrian Healy, Casey Healy, J Jacob Healy, Riley Healy, Colton Healy and John Kovacevich
