GALVESTON, TX- Ira Hulon Barnes of Galveston passed from this life on October 15, 2022 at the age of 96. He was born to Clyde and Mildred Barnes on January 11, 1926 in Lake Creek, Texas.
At the age of 17, Ira enlisted in the Air Corp Reserve and entered active military service when he was 18 years old. He underwent basic training and gunnery training prior to his entry into World War II. During the war, he flew 22 missions serving as a gunner on B-17 bombers. Ira maintained contact with fellow crew members- his brotherhood- regularly throughout his life.
After the war, Ira began his studies at the University of Texas, which explains his love for Longhorn football. Later on, he took and passed the civil service exam and began a lifetime career as a civil servant. For many years, Ira worked for the U. S. Postal Service and was known by those who regularly visited Galveston’s long-time post office building on 25th Street.
After retirement from the postal service, Ira, known by many as Mr. Hulon, led a quiet and peaceful life as would be expected for the quiet, peaceful, kind gentleman that he was. He was active as a Mason and a member of Galveston’s Harmony Lodge where he met his long-time friend, William D. Snipes, who preceded him in death.
His last few years were spent in comfort at Concord Assisted Living, where he was well taken care of by Judy and her staff, especially Velmashia and Wanda. All those who knew and loved Mr. Hulon are thankful to them for the expert care they provided him during his final years.
Ira requested there be no formal service, so instead, family and friends will gather to have a memorial graveside service to honor the memory of a kind gentleman who served our country well both in war and in peace. Godspeed to you, Mr. Hulon.
