Eljie Simpton Obituary

Eljie Broussard Simpton passed away at the age of 104, at her home in Galveston, on March 12, 2024.  She was surrounded by loving family and remained alert until her last breaths.

Eljie was born in Milton LA. on February 28, 1920.  She was the next-to-youngest of seven children of Alphe and Eloge Broussard.  The family moved to Port Bolivar, TX. when Eljie was eight years old. They were part of the original "Frenchtown" settlement of Bolivar.

Eljie graduated from Ball High School in 1938 and married Ernest E. "Jerry" Simpton a few years later.  Their first child, Jerry, came in 1942 followed by three daughters, Rita, LouAnn and Terri.  Eljie and Jerry were partners in all of life's missions, with Eljie providing a loving home and support.  She was the bookkeeper for the farm and ranch, and was always available to care for the animals or work the field. She and Jerry helped the Port Bolivar community by holding benefit Bar-b-q's and Rodeos for the church or Fire Department.  They were 4-H Club leaders and regularly took the family on camping trips and to horse shows and fairs. They were both good dancers and enjoyed Saturday night dances in Bolivar or Galveston.

Eljie was an excellent cook and never failed to put a delicious meal on the table whenever there were mouths to feed. If you were lucky, you got to try out her gumbo or award winning pecan pie.  She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church in Port Bolivar and Galveston for her entire life.  She led the exercise classes at the Galveston Co. Senior Center for several years.  She loved watching the Astros ballgames and her favorite player Jose Altuve.  Eljie lived in Port Bolivar until Hurricane Ike.  She then moved to her only other home in Galveston. She remained active, even after her one hundredth birthday and was always ready to get dressed up and go celebrate, dancing or just be out with family and friends.

Eljie is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Ernest "Jerry" Simpton, daughter Rita, and Daughter in law, Elenor Simpton, and siblings Anne Mouton, Lou Hubbard, Olan Hughes, Nathan Broussard, and Aaron Broussard.

She is survived by her son, Jerry Simpton and daughters Lou Ann Casalini and Terri Simpton, grandchildren Scott Simpton, Barry Simpton, Dan Simpton. Desa Polivka, and Myra Morrison.  Great grandchildren include Ryan Simpton, Kahla Simpton, Ceily Simpton, Miley Simpton, Frank "Ivan" Polivka and Odin Clay.

Visitation will be held at J.
