Edgar A. Moore, born August 28, 1946 in Galveston, Texas, passed away on May 15, 2025 in Houston, Texas due to complications of heart disease and dementia. Edgar was proud of being a "BOI" (Born on the island), graduating from Galveston's Ball High, North Texas State College (now University of North Texas), and the University of Houston where he earned a double Masters in Music.
Edgar started his opera career while still in high school, and he sang tenor with several opera companies including Dallas Fort Worth Opera, Arizona Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Houston Grand Opera. He particularly cherished his memories of singing in HGO's world premier production of "Nixon in China" with which he traveled to the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Edinburgh Festival. In that company he mentored a new supernumerary, Michael Ewer, and they became friends for the rest of Edgar's life.
Following his opera career, Edgar began sharing his musical expertise as a Professor of Music at San Jacinto College North, where he taught music literature, taught and conducted two choirs, and taught voice students. Edgar truly loved teaching and giving back to the community. Edgar also volunteered for the Texas Music Educators 2 Year College Conference, and he relished taking students to San Antonio to sing in the conference's 2 Year College Chorus. Edgar was also the founder and music director of the Sons of Orpheus men's choir, which performed several times at Trinity Episcopal's Organ Extravaganza and at venues around metro Houston and beyond. Edgar was also pleased to be tenor section leader in Trinity's Senior Choir for many years under the direction of now retired organist and music director Ron Wyatt.
Edgar was predeceased by his parents, John A. Moore and Willene Moore (nee Hicks). He is survived by his wife Gretchen (nee York), brother George Michael Moore (Antoinette Pacini) of Galveston, and sister Carolyn Moore Dyar of Portland, Oregon.
