It is with great sadness that the Walsh Family announces the passing of Edward Joseph Walsh, Jr., who, after a short illness, passed in the early morning hours of August 11, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Born June 22, 1932 in the St. Mary’s Infirmary to Edward J. Walsh, Sr., CPA (1901-1960) and Margaret Marrero Walsh (1902-1994), Edward was a fourth-generation Galvestonian who epitomized the best aspects of those born and raised on this barrier island.

In his early years, Edward’s family moved to a new home on 42nd & S½ where he had a full and exciting life with his parents and sister, Marjorie Walsh Camp. One fateful day, he looked across the fence to his next door neighbor’s home and caught the eye of Rose Marie Tulloch. Together since that first meeting, Edward and Rose Marie dated continually and married on October 31, 1953 in St. Patrick Catholic Church. Edward literally married the girl next door. They have been inseparable both in work and play for almost 70 years and celebrated 62 years of marriage last October.

Edward and Rose Marie are wonderful parents who raised their three children, Edward J. Walsh III (Eddie), Kevin Christopher Walsh, and Kimberly Christine Walsh-Rodriquez, to understand the value of community and hard work. This was furthered when he became “Big Daddy” to six wonderful grandchildren, all who flourish due to the wisdom and nurturing he provided.

As a lifelong Galvestonian, Edward was educated at St. Patrick Parish Elementary School and graduated from Kirwin High School in 1949 along with many other prominent Galvestonians. Edward entered the University of Texas at Austin where he studied accounting, banking, and finance. In 1953, he earned a Bachelor’s degree and entry into the School of Business MBA program.

Edward soon joined his father’s practice, Edward J. Walsh & Associates, Certified Public Accountants, one of the oldest CPA firms in the State of Texas, established in 1932. There he practiced accountancy and perfected his skills. He helped many individuals and businesses over the years by listening to and working for the benefit of thousands of clients he has served over the years. Many of these clients have become close, long-lasting friends.

Edward was joined in the firm by his wife, Rose Marie, where they worked hand in hand every day for the last 35 years. In 1982, his son, Eddie, joined the practice, and in 1989, his second son, Kevin, followed. Working continually until a few days prior to his passing, Edward and his family worked together to help their clients and friends and to benefit Galveston.

As a Galvestonian, Edward knew that there was more to life than just work, so he lived that life to the fullest. He offered his knowledge and acumen by generously serving on the Boards of the Galveston YMCA, Lasker Children’s Home, O’Connell High School, Treasure Ball Association, and most recently, American National Life Insurance Company of New York.

Edward, the family, and countless friends spent many weekends at their “camp” where he would boat, fish or just relax during the hot summer weekends. He supported his beloved University of Texas with many visits to home and away football games, cheering the Longhorns to victory. Travel also was a very important part of his downtime. Whether it was a family ski trip to Colorado or a cruise with Rose Marie, Edward enjoyed being with those he loved.

Edward had many friends too numerous to mention, many who enjoy good food and fine wine like Edward did. These friends are members of the Galveston Oenophiles wine club, of which Edward has been a long and valued member for over 35 years. Edward was honored to be a member of Club 25 and a founding member of Galveston’s Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs food and wine clubs.

Edward will not be forgotten by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose Marie; Sons: Edward Walsh III, his wife Veronica Hugger, and her son Joseph Rees Hugger; Kevin Christopher Walsh, his fiancé Leann Carmical, and his children Jack Edward, Margaret Ann, and Daniel Steven; and daughter Kimberly Christine Walsh-Rodriguez, her husband Ruben, and their children Katherine Marie, Emily Christine, and Michael Justice. Edward also is survived by his sister Marjorie Walsh Camp and her children.

The family will receive visitors beginning 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 14, 2016 at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home located at 2128 Broadway. A Vigil Service and Rosary will begin at 5:00 p.m. officiated by Deacon Sam Dell'Olio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 15, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 34th at Broadway, with Father E.J. Stein, OFM, as Celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Holy Family Parish to support the St. Patrick Building Fund.
