Rufina Guzman Tijerina went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January13, 2017. She was born on November 20, 1923 in Galveston, Texas. She was the daughter of Benito and Isabel Gonzalez Guzman. She was the heart and soul of our family. She lost both her parents while still a teenager, marrying at the age of 17. She took the responsibility of raising her brother who was six years younger than her. She was tested again, while still quite young, as her husband served in the Army during World War II. Mom’s first born daughter had severe cerebral palsy, to be taken care of as a baby throughout her life. This daughter lived to be 56 years old, when children like her averaged ten years of life at the time. Mom decided to work in her forties and became a nurse’s aide; training at John Sealy Hospital and retiring from St. Mary’s Hospital She loved her job, taking care of people and interacting with her co-workers. She worked only on the night shift in order to still care for her special needs daughter; feeding her three meals a day and sitting her up three to four times a day. Mom also had two other daughters and a son. She was always there for them in countless ways. She exemplified strength, independence, loyalty and kindness. She was not a demonstrative person, but her character came through in her actions, not words. Later in life, the family learned that she would send donations to persons in need that she heard about in the news. The family feels very blessed, honored and proud to have had her as our mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and sister.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jesse Tijerina; her daughter, Yolanda Tijerina, and her two brothers, Ruben and Raymond Guzman. She is survived by her daughters, Rose Tijerina and Lillian Wiley; her son, Jesse Tijerina Jr. and wife, Linda; her grandchildren: Autumn Wenner and husband Justin, Jay Wiley and wife Sally; her great grandchildren: Dyson and Anderton Wiley, Christian Hernandez, Dylan and Sophia Wenner; her brother, Robin Guzman and former daughter-in-law, Martha “Anna” Wynn and numerous nephews and nieces.
