Mary Louise Mathis, age 89, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Cypresswood Nursing Home in Angleton, Texas. She was born on October 30, 1928 in Vernon, Texas.

Mary was raised in Vernon, Texas and graduated from Vernon High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from McMurry University. While sailing, she met the love of her life, Fred Mathis. Following their wedding in 1958, they resided in Angleton, where she taught elementary school. Upon retirement, they moved to Galveston, where Fred was raised. They had been married 59 years. Her passion was teaching and her family. Even after retirement, she would tutor children on a volunteer basis. She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. She and Fred belonged to The Greater Houston Car Club and were involved in Genealogy.

She was preceded in death by her infant son who died at birth; grandson Matthew David Anderson; and brother Bryan Stewart Jr.

She is survived by her husband Fred G. Mathis, Jr; daughter Mary Ann Anderson and husband David; sons Frederick Mathis, III and wife Jody and Douglas Mathis and wife Karen; brothers David Stewart and wife Leota and Frank Stewart; sister-in-law June Lee Forasieppi and husband Al; grandchildren Richard Anderson, Ryan Anderson, Clayton Mathis and Connor Mathis; 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a Rosary to begin at 7:00 P.M, with Deacon John Pistone officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, with Father Orrin Halespeska officiating. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Douglas Mathis, Frederick Mathis, David Anderson, Richard Anderson, Ryan Anderson and Clayton Mathis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in memory of Mary Mathis, to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2909 W. Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77025-9992.
