Irene M. Quiroga, age 97, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at Elmcroft Senior Living. She was born on September 7, 1919 in Texas City, Texas, but grew up in Galveston, Texas in an extended family. She graduated from Ball High School and continued her education in secretarial school.

Irene was employed many years for the Longshore program in the Galveston office as an interpreter of Spanish to English. She retired January 19, 1984 after 20 years of dedicated service to her Government, to the Department of Labor, and to the Longshore Division of ESA/OWCP.

When Irene retired, she spent her days doing what she loved, which was reading, listening to music and watching her soap opera, The Young and the Restless. She belonged to every possible book club and had an extensive collection of long play records and CD’s. She also enjoyed entertaining her family members and was always there in time of need. She was a devoted wife, a loving sister and aunt.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles “Silverio” Quiroga; mother Mayme D. Komzelman; step-mother Antonia M. Cortez; father Cruz M. Cortez, Sr.; brothers Godfrey Cortez and Cruz Cortez, II.

She is survived by her sisters Mercedes M. Cortez of Galveston, Texas and Aurora Watkins of Brookhaven, PA; nephews Cruz Cortez III, Rick Cortez and Jose Cortez of Galveston, Chris Watkins of Newtown, CT, and David Watkins of Ridley Park, PA; niece Ana M. Cortez of Galveston; and numerous grand nephews and grand nieces.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home, with Ana M. Cortez officiating. Visitation will be held prior to service time beginning at 12 Noon. Graveside services will be private.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cruz Cortez III, Jose Cortez, Roger Quiroga, David Quiroga, James Johnson, III, Joe Quiroga, Jr, George Quiroga, C.L. Quiroga and William Quiroga.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Elmcroft Senior Living in Texas City for the compassionate care and love provided during her illness. Also a special thanks to Essential Hospice and Palliative Services of Houston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of one’s choice.
