Carol Soto Rourke

May 27, 1944 — February 11, 2014

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 5:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Tom Ponzini officiating.

The family will be receiving friends prior to service time beginning at 4:00 P.M.

Carol Soto Rourke, age 69, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at her residence. She was born on May 27, 1944 in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico. Carol and her family moved to Galveston when she was 4 years old. She attended grade school, Lovenberg Jr. High, and graduated from Ball High. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital as a work clerk, then worked as a Phlebotomist at UTMB for 15 years and retired. After taking some time off, she fulfilled her passion by working with children and the elderly. She worked for GISD and Rosenberg Elementary as a substitute and bilingual teacher’s aide. Carol spent the last 25 years providing love and compassion to children and the elderly. She touched so many with her own unique ways by caring for her “special extended family”, because no one was just a client to her. Once she met someone – they automatically became “Mijo”, “Mija”, a “new father and mother”, or a “new son and daughter.”

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister, and was a member of the choir. She volunteered serving the hungry at Our Daily Bread and enjoyed helping anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mel Rourke, Sr., parents Lucas & Eduarda Robles, brothers Cecilio Robles, Sr. and Panfilo M. Robles and sister Juana Nieto, and her “special sweet angel” Abigail “Abbie” Roland and her beloved Camille Sunseri.

She is survived by her heart and soul and only grandson, Noah Luis Martinez, daughter Juanita Soto Martinez (Fiancé David Martinez and his daughter Ali Martinez), sisters Esther Salgado, Margaret Mendoza and Mary Garcia; her beloved and extended children, Ricky & Joni Galvan, Alfredo and Tracy Cantu and children, Charles Anthony Chapman, and little baby Vangie Brown and numerous nieces, and nephews.
