Betty Banks Lucas, age 87, of Galveston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 25, 2016. Betty was born November 14, 1929, in Marion, North Carolina, the youngest of seven children to John Barnett Banks and Docia Mae Young. Betty married Gene Lucas on December 18, 1954, in Washington D.C. Their 62 year marriage was filled with love for each other and family.

Betty is survived by her husband, Gene Lucas, of Galveston, Texas; daughters Margaret Norman and husband Mike of Apple Valley, California; Linda Rutherford and husband John of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren: Cameron Lucas Snyder of San Diego, California, Corbin Eugene Snyder of Santa Barbara, California, Victoria Storey Rutherford and CaseyArmstrong Rutherford of Dallas, Texas.

Those who preceded her in death include her parents, five brothers, Alvin Banks, Ray Banks, Jack Banks, Jim Banks, John Banks, and sister Mildred Bradham.

Upon high school graduation, Betty was employed by the Duke Power Company in Marion, North Carolina, until she moved to Washington D.C. to take a job at The Hotel Washington where she met Gene. Betty and Gene relocated to Galveston, Texas where they spent the next 59 years. Betty volunteered at her children’s schools, Trinity Episcopal and O’Connell. She was the first president of the Volunteer Association of the Shriners Burns Hospital, she served many years as a Board of Director for the Y.W.C.A., and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Betty was also active in the Galveston Country Club Women’s Golf Association and played in several bridge clubs. Betty attended Central Christian Church where she was a member for 59 years.

The family would like to thank Betty’s assistants Rosa Mugartegui, Joy Dozier, and Vicki Duggins for the love and support they provided to Betty. The family would also like to express their gratitude to longtime friends Jimmie Ward, Lori Pepper, and Cynde Lee who regularly visited Betty, who took her to the movie, and played bridge. Their friendship meant the world to Betty and her family.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home, 2128 Broadway, Galveston, Texas, with Reverend Raymond Pinard officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Central Christian Church, 2702 Avenue O ½, Galveston, Texas, 77550, the Shriners Hospital for Children, attention Donor Development, 815 Market Street, Galveston, Texas, 77550, or charity of the donor’s choice.
