Petra Ortiz Torres, 86, passed away on May 7, 2014, in Austin, Texas, after a long struggle with the effects of strokes and illness.
Petra was born on December 6, 1927, in Villa de Guadalupe, S.L.P., Mexico. She grew up as part of a large family, helping her parents with the care of their land and animal herds. At a very young age, Petra came to work in the valley region of south Texas. Eventually Petra moved to Galveston, TX, where she met her future husband, Frank. They were married in 1955 and would share 52 years together, taking care of extended family while building their own. Petra was an exemplary and devoted daughter who helped to provide for her parents all of their lives. She was a dedicated wife and mother, who never put herself first and who always was concerned about the happiness and well being of her family. She was also a generous sister who helped her siblings gain a better life.
Our mother was a strong, resilient woman who was determined to make a better life for herself and her family. She worked very hard and was the type of mom who denied things for herself in order to provide for her children and other family members. She withstood many difficulties and personal losses with a courage and strength that were extraordinary. The joys of her life were her children and grandchildren, and we all have wonderful memories of sitting around the kitchen table as mom served up one of her delicious meals. And when it was the season for tamales, people lined up to have a taste! She and our father were active members of the Reina de la Paz Mission and spent many days and weekends helping to support their church. Mom loved her adopted country, and it was a great source of pride that she earned her citizenship and was able to participate as a voter.
Mom spent the last 5 years living with the effects of a major stroke. She was an independent and vital person who had to face the challenge of relying on others for help with her daily needs. Yet she learned to take back as much control as she could and was able to decide the direction of her life. Our mother will be forever missed, but she will always be an example of great personal will and the possibilities in life that such determination can bring.
Petra was preceded in death by her parents, Patricio and Josefa Ortiz, her beloved husband, Frank P. Torres, her in-laws, Engracia and Jose Torres, her son, Alfonso Ortiz, Sr., and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughter Yolanda Torres ( Michael Schulte) of Austin, TX, her son Enrique Robledo, Sr. of Galveston, TX., her grandchildren Elisabeth, Jesse, Rosalba, Maria, Alfonso, Jr., Veronica, Patrick, Melanie, Tiffany, Henry, Jr., and Frank, her great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild, her sisters Cuca (Ramiro) Reyna of Galveston, Jesus (Pablo) Vega of Chicago, Illinois, Maria O. Mar of Matamoros, Mexico, and Teresa O. (Epifanio) Mata of Texas City, TX, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers include Henry Robledo, Jr., Frank Robledo, Justin Patrick, Arnulfo Mar, and Michael Schulte.
The family would like to thank Legacy Hospice of Austin, TX for the caring and compassionate treatment they gave to our mom. She died with great dignity and peace.
Our mother’s long journey in this world has ended, but we hold dear the promise that she is walking with her loved ones that had been lost to her and whom she missed so much. Te queremos ahora y siempre mama.
