Golda Plantowsky Sussan, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday, August 8, 2013, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her adoring family. She will always be remembered for her soft-spoken ways, her inner and outer beauty, her kindness to everyone with whom she came in contact, and as someone who treasured her family above all else.

She was born in Galveston, Texas, on October 9, 1923, to Libby and Sam Plantowsky. She began working in her family furniture business, Plantowsky’s, when she was 12 years old. She graduated from Ball High School in 1941, and shortly thereafter, met Donald Sussan, the love of her life. They were married on August 31, 1947, when she was 24 years old.

Golda’s 61-year union with Don resulted in their four precious daughters. She brought Don into the family furniture business, and they worked side by side for many years until it was sold by her brother. In 1977, she and Don opened their own furniture store, Sussan Home Furnishings, in Texas City. They retired from the business in 1987.

She was a woman of many interests. Among those were square dancing, ballroom dancing, bowling, tennis, Bridge, Mah Jongg and traveling. She was an active member of the B’nai B’rith Women and Hadassah.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don, her brothers Morris Plantowsky and Louis Plantowsky, and her sisters Minnie Cohen and Clare Ducoff.

She is survived by daughter Sandy Nash and Garrett Tarver; daughter Janet Sussan; daughter Leslie Grodin and husband Richie; and daughter Kim Jagger and husband John. She was blessed with seven darling grandchildren: Lorin Nash and husband Lee Jones; Justin Grodin and wife Rachel; Jared Grodin and wife Amma; Micah Grodin and wife Jordann; Shane Grodin; Zachary Kirkpatrick and wife Tracy; and Courtney Kirkpatrick. She is also survived by her beloved great granddaughter Chloe Jones; her sister Shirley Mucasey and husband Leon; and a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; all of whom will miss her deeply.

In her declining years, she was attended to by Erica Buchanan, Robin Silver, Yolanda Murray and Vitas Hospice Care, and the family wishes to thank them very much.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2242 West Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX, 77030, or via their website www.alz.org/texas.
