John Giokas, age 72, passed away Friday, November 29, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Athens, Greece on September 28, 1941 to Eugenia Taxtagi and Angelo Giokas. When he left Greece, he was a sailor working on ships and sailed to New York. From there he moved to Florida, then Texas. He moved to Galveston 15 years ago, where he worked as a contractor, landlord, but most of all a father. For over 15 years John was a dedicated parishioner of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, where he was also a member of the AHEPA (Greek Men’s Organization). John had a larger than life aspect and he will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.
John is survived by his loving wife Mary Giokas; children, Lisa Johnson and husband Darrell of Orlando, Florida, Michelle Giokas of Orlando, Florida, Rodney Strickland and wife Laura of Galveston, Texas, Jill Eskew and husband Charles of Richmond, Texas, Noah Hennigan of Galveston, Texas, Angelo Giokas and wife Carrie of Pearland, and Nakia Giokas of Galveston, Texas; sisters Niki, Vasso and Ritza Giokas; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013 at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home form 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a Trisagion Service to begin at 7:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 19th and Ball Street, Galveston, Texas 77550, with Father Stelios Sitaras officiating. Interment will follow at the Serbian Orthodox Cemetery on 61st Street, Galveston.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Strickland, Noah Hennigan, Angelo Giokas, Charles Eskew, Joseph Lobo and Shawn Lobo.
